Tom Hammond made a fantastic suggestion a while
back regarding the icky black crud on a soldering
iron tip.  Get one of those copper mesh pot scrubbers
(pack of 2 for about a buck fifty at the supermarket)
and use it on the tip of the iron while it's hot.  Works
beautifully for me.
