I've generally had decent luck getting it not too far past the temp at 
which it'll melt solder, then scrubbing it a bit with some coarse steel 
wool, and IMMEDIATELY hitting it with copious amounts of solder and flux.

The LAST thing you want to do is to hit it with something that'll cut thru 
the iron plating...! This will ensure that the rest of the iron plating 
peels off all too quickly.
