Hi

Do not use silver bearing solder It is no longer recommended by Elecraft.=
The reason silver is alloyed with solder is to prevent the solder from d=
issolving the silver coating from surface mount components. If the solder=
is already saturated with silver then it will not attack the silvering o=
n the surface mounts component. There are no surface mount components in =
any Elecraft kits so you are just making it hard on yourself if you use i=
t. Use a good quality 63/37 .030 rosin flux solder like Multicore or Kest=
er 44

Most paste flux compounds have a corrosive base don't use them anywhere i=
n your kit unless you know for sure it is only rosin base. The crystal ca=
ses do not require any additional flux. The Radio Shack stuff is corrosiv=
e

The solder blob method is the accepted method to strip the toroid leads. =
Learn to do it right and you will save yourself a lot of troubleshooting

All of the above is just my opinion but it works for me

   Hello Simon,

<SNIP>
6) Silver bearing solder (recomended by Elecraft. Clean, looks good but h=
ard
to desolder so be careful) (get 2 rolls just in case ($4)

12) Soldering flux (use sparingly and only on hard to solder surfaces lik=
e
when grounding crystal housings or coax connectors) ($3)

13)" TORCH" TYPE butane cigarette lighter and fine grit sand paper for
striping enamel wire. There are several ways to do this but this method
works best for me.
