I think the answer to Tim's question is inherent in the KBT2 kit: it
includes a heavy-duty slide switch for the rear panel of the K2 that can
be used to disable the internal battery. You can then connect an
external battery without worrying about under-charging and damaging the
internal one. So there's never a need to open up the K2 and disconnect a
battery wire.
