... Switching to the K2/100 I got a 59
report (100 W) but he said the 817 had substantially better audio :-(

Seems I recall a mod to the K2 to improve the IF shape for SSB. I may
have done it, but I think not. Can anyone point me to it and comment on

its effectiveness.

-------------------------------

There is a modification to the 2nd Xfil that is recommended by Wayne and
which substantially improves the sound of SSB, but in reception only!
It has NO effect on the transmit signal since the 2nd Xfil at the output
of the i-f amplifier is NOT used in transmit.

Recently Glenn, WA7SPY and I cured a serious "muddy" audio problem on
SSB by installing a new set of crystals for the i-f filters. It was most
apparent on only one sideband. The audio was understandable but very
poor. I would suggest contacting Eric or Wayne about this. As I
understand it, the problem occurs mostly in older K2's as Elecraft has
tightened up their crystal specs over time.

There are other mods that change the audio quality of the K2 SSB module
published by KI6WI at http://home.pacbell.net/johngreb/KI6WX.html, but
if you have a bad set of crystals, change them first!
