How would you know which VFO is in use?

I have the reverse problem. I ALWAYS use split so I can twiddle with the
receive tuning using the main tuning knob. Whenever I tune to a frequency
where I want to transmit (e.g. "zero beat" with another station or a clear
spot for a CQ) I just hit A=B and know that my transmitter is now 'locked'
on that frequency while I continue to tune around it with the main tuning
control.

But if I forget to turn SPLIT on, I'm actually messing with the transmit
frequency as well by accident.
