Ed and all,
I just couldn't resist - most of us DO take pride in our kit building, but I
think referring to it as homebrew is a bit of a stretch.
I have done a lot of homebrew - ranging from duplicating a published design
to doing my own design from scratch - and yes, I have built many kits in my
45 years of hamming.
I also take great pride in my homebrew even though many of them never end up
in nice neat enclosures, the experience of making something operate properly
that I have designed from scratch is quite gratifying, but then so is having
a great operating kit which looks great too.
I would never say that a kit was homebrew - even if it does qualify in many
contests. OTOH, I don't mind if other folks want to refer to it as
homebrew. I will say that if someone tells me that he has a homebrew K2, I
would conjure up a mental picture of the K2 design built from scratch. I
think it is sufficient to identify it as the K2 "kit" (or "kitbuilt" if you
prefer a longer form) - homebuilt says almost the same thing, but homebrew
says something entirely different to me.
