Yes, it IS possible to extract a cube root with pencil and paper.  It's 
similar to the manual square root process, but you group the numbers in 
threes instead of twos.  I read it in an old book called the Lincoln 
Library of Essential Information.  (Sorry, I don't remember the exact 
procedure, but I'll look for it if you like.)
