It seems to me that there is plenty to be learned and gained by
building your own rig, regardless of exactly how you go about it.
There are relatively few who actually "design" their own rigs. Most of
us use someone else's design in one way or another. It may be a
complete kit with step-by-step instructions or it may be a bag of
parts and a schematic or it may be build from a magazine article and
involve etching your own PC boards and doing your own metal work. I
wouldn't classify any of it as "mindless".
