Bill has a good summary of the detailed balun issues, but the original
discussion downplaying baluns missed the point of using one with the K2 was
to facilitate true balanced feed to a parallel line feeder, typically at
some step up ratio other than 1:1 of the coax chokes or bead baluns.

I  lost track of who thought the cored baluns were not so good, but I have
even used those in commercial Tee tuners to place my club in the top 10 in
Field Days over some years, thus their efficiency was good enough to get us
comments of "loudest signal on the band" (20m) in New England, with our TX
station using 5 watts on SSB.  Jerry Sevick measured efficiencies in the 90
per cent plus for core baluns he wound in his classic book "Baluns and
Ununs".  Since a dipole is often quoted as being 92 per cent efficient,
seems the right core is right up there at the state of the art.
