John,

The others gave you good advice for building the kit in general.  But for
tinning toroid leads I have found that an even bigger tip is useful.  I am
not sure about the model you have, mine uses the tips to set the
temperature.  For tinning toroids I use a 1/4 inch.  The tips that have are
numbered 6, 7 and 8.  The 1/4 inch is the only 8 which stands for 800
degrees if I am not mistaken.

Using a larger tip with more heat helps tin the leads more easily.
