I believe that is by design. At least mine is configured the same way (I
have no idea what that element in the front is for either, it actually
looks like a speaker to me). I used another vendor's mic before I got the
MH2 and it behaved similarly. Keep in mind that an average reading
wattmeter will read roughly around 1 watt max when running 10w SSB, perhaps
somewhat more if you have the compression cranked up to max. The LED meter
on the radio is essentially peak reading and should be believed.
I assume you did provide power to the mic by installing the resistor on the
mic jack (you must have, because I don't think it works at all if you don't).
