Success!  I found the short INSIDE J1, between pins 12 and 13.  I ended up
cutting away the connector between the pins with a dremel tool.  The very
base the female terminals were touching at the point which appeared to be
molded in the plastic!  I had to heat the solder joint of pin 12 to pry them
apart.  I know it's usually operator error when mating connectors, but this
was the middle terminal of a 20 way connector.
