[Elecraft] K2 Alignment and Test, Part 1

I seem to be having some problems on the Alignment and Test, Part 1 page 41
of the manual.
On initial power EVERYTHING was working as described up until the optical
encoder test on page 42. As soon as I touched the VFO knob the display
changes and then locks up requiring me to cycle power.

Observations:

1. After the display locks up it ends up message like "SPd 51", "P8.2", or
7099.9. When the display locks the "SR CK" signal goes to, and stays at 0
volts (per digital scope).

2. If R5 (RIT/XIT) is less than about 80% of full clockwise the LCD displays
"ELE" if turn to full CW display will change to "ELECRAFT".

3. Moving R5 slightly will cause the display to change briefly from 7099.9
to "P14.8" or "P13.2", "SPd47", "SPd48", and then back to 7099.9.

3. About half of the time on power up the display is stuck on 7099.9.

4. About a quarter of the time the display and buttons work great until I
touch the VFO knob.

Questions:

1. I did read about the "ELE" message but don't understand how the /SPD RD,
/BANK1, /BANK2 outputs can impact the data and clock lines out of the
processor (U6). I also don't see how the shaft encoder lines could cause
the unit to "lock up". Can anyone tell me how the /SPD RD, /BANK1, /BANK2
lines are strobed? In looking at them with a scope they are static.
It's kind hard to tell what should be going on without knowing what "tricks"
are going on with the software.

I did borrow a nice 4 channel digital scope from work so if anyone has any
questions about the various signals let me know.

Thanks,
Tom
