I would believe that very little machining (if any) would be required.
Remember that the KPA100 design is for the existing cover to be replaced -
so most all the holes will be in the upper part of the new rear cover.  If
my assumption is correct, the addition of just one ( 2 at most) cable
connector should be all that would be required to mount the KPA100 external
to the base K2.

If my memory is correct, that was the initial incentive for Elecraft
announcing the EC2.
