All Scott says is consistent with my experience, especially in the US.  In
Germany you can always expect the security folks to ask you to turn on any
electronic device in your hand-carried luggage and prove it functions as
what it appears to be. I don't know what they would do if you didn't have a
battery or speaker/phones.

Here's what the Brits do. I was recently stopped at random in Manchester,
UK, for a close inspection of my checked luggage. I explained what the rigs
were and that it would be difficult to show them operating. They quite
reasonably stopped the inspection at that point and directed me to a large
X-ray machine so they could examine the innards. All quite civilized.

I now pack my rigs in my checked luggage along with any tools or other
objects that could startle security personnel.
