One trick I found is to wind the coil counting the turns, then wind coil
another, then go back and flip over the first one you wound and count the
turns. By winding the next coil, then going back and flipping over and
recounting the turns you have forced yourself to due a fresh approach to the
turns counting. You also look at both sides of the toroid to make sure no
turns overlap.
When tinning the toroids I have a cheap little plastic vice to hold the
toroid, you do not want to use a regular metal vice or clamp, that you could
accidentally over tighten and break or weaken the toroid or wire. Another
way is to clamp your soldering iron in a vice and hold the toroid to tin it,
unfortunately the wires can get hot.
