Hello Bob/Elecrafters,
The MP-1 coil is much slimmer than the PW-1, I've got both. Yes, you can put
a collapsable whip in place of the individual sections. In fact, you can mix
and match any lengths of top tubing or bottom section...but you'll come up
with your own set of correct settings, not Vern's. Using an MFJ-259 makes a
snap of tune up.
I use my MP-1 mobile and have completely changed the antenna configuration
by putting a 27 inch aluminum base, then the coil, and then a 48" stainless
2m whip on top. It works like gangbusters too, working a VU2 on 20 meters
while in motion. I consistently get 'screwdriver' type reports without
having a huge ugly screwdriver antenna on my CR-V. You can check it out at
