Hi Steve:

Probably so.
Within the first week following the completion of assembly of my FT K2 (S/N
00008), I mentioned to Wayne and Eric that I was routinely losing my DC
supply connection at the back of the K2. Almost any movement of the rig
would result in a failed connection.
I initially accused them of sending us (FTs) the wrong sized plug, or one
with too short a barrel. But that was not the case. I didn't realize that I
just couldn't insert the plug fully into the socket.
Fearing the same as you mentioned above, MISdrilling the hole, I merely
used a reamer to carefully open the hole a bit more. This permitted me to
fully insert the plug and I've had no further problems whatsoever, even
during mobile and DXpedition operating.
A bit later in the production cycle, Elecraft saw fit to increase the
diameter of the hole.
Like you, I would not encourage anyone to use a drill motor to open the
hole, but I believe a handheld reamer or even successively larger
(handheld) drill bits could be utilized to easily increade the diameter of
the hole without fear of damaging the case.
