>When tossing a random end over the tent and into the trees...<SNIP>

When operating portable, I find a balanced antenna works really well. Years
ago I used various end fed antennas, including some supported at quite a
height with a kite. While the kite is certainly appealing, the performance
was hardly ever as good as my modest antennas at home. I put this down to
using a balanced antenna at home. If you are happy running a length of wire
against ground or a counterpoise at home then by all means use one
portable...
To support the antenna(s) I use a DK9SQ "fishing pole" mast 10 metres high,
mostly using either a horizontal or vertical doublet depending on band and
location. Best DX has been CT1 to ZL using a dipole at 20 feet on 20m and 5
Watts output.
