Yes, I've done that. The rattle isn't near the front panel board from
what I can tell, and I don't think it's any of the toroids. It is hard
to reproduce with just the speaker/cover sitting in open air, because once
mounted on the case, the resonance changes quite a bit.

I'm aware of that. What I did was stick four Radio Shack plastic
grommets in the mounting holes, so the screws would not exert as
much pressure...that didn't change anything and now I am back to
standard mounting.

I tried that, too, with no change! I really think it could
be a defective speaker -- like the magnet/voice coil is
rubbing -- but that would tend to happen at all frequencies, not
just the low ones.
I have the KNB1 in my K1. In looking at some speakers in the Digikey
catalog, I found ones which looked similar in dimension/type to the
K1 and K2 ones, and if they are an indication, there may be clearance
enough to put the 3W K2 one with the large magnet in the K1.
(I am probably wrong, however -- otherwise, why would Elecraft stock
two of them? Oh I know....that 3 oz. of weight on the trail when packing
the K1 is a huge burden....hi)
