[Elecraft] Mic preamp

I got a communications headset with microphone. There's no PTT but I hoped
to use it with the K2's VOX. Unfortunately there isn't enough output to
trigger the VOX and when I close the PTT manually it appears that the
output is several DBs too low to fully drive the K2, even with SSBA set to
3.

I don't think there's really enough room inside the mic plug shell to build
a preamp, and there's nowhere in the mic itself to do so, since it's just
an element on the end of a metal boom. I'm interested to know if anyone
else has encountered a similar problem, and how they solved it.
