Daniel,
I would seconded the opinion of getting the 4 band K1. You'll have a wide=
r range of frequency choices in the same package and for just a few more =
dollars (OK maybe a few more 10's of dollars). You'll get 40, 30, 20, and=
your choice of 17, or 15 (chosen at the time of the build). 17 and 15 ar=
e a toss up as they are similar bands. They cover about the same as far a=
s distance and daytime usage is concerned. 17 is a WARC band, so no conte=
sting on it, if that's your bag. I chose 15 for my K1 for that reason.

Regarding an antenna, I have two stealthy options. First is a Hustler mob=
ile mount on the corner of my balcony. I can interchange loading coils fo=
r the band I choose to operate on. This would be similar with a Hamstick.=
I've run some wires around the railing and a set of TV rabbit ears (laid=
horizontally out from the corner) to act as a ground plane. I, of course=
, also have a mag mount for the truck to operate mobile. Second is a W3ED=
P (Ref.; Practical Wire Antennas, RSGB). This antenna consists of an 85-f=
t long wire antenna with a 17-ft counterpoise. Simply connect/dis-connect=
the counterpoise for best operation. This is a great camping antenna! Si=
mply toss up the 85-ft wire into a nearby tree and off you go. If you hap=
pen to a have a tree next to your house you can use the same antenna at h=
ome (or try tossing it over the roof). =20

I use a similar principle with my "Gutter" antenna. It consists of a 30-f=
t downspout, a 50-ft gutter, and a 5-ft downspout on the far end. I've go=
t a short piece of wire connected to the base of the 30-ft downspout. The=
K1's tuner (KAT1) easily tunes the "wire" antenna on all bands. I've mad=
e contacts all across the US/Canada and some DX as well. It's not ideal, =
but it works!
