The mod you may be thinking of is to improve the waveshape of the sidetone, not
the transmited note.  The transmitted note should be absolutely pure DC if the
rig is working properly.  The K2 is quite sensitive to magnetic fields, so it is
important to keep it at least 18" away from linear power supplies, antenna
rotors, etc. -- anything with a transformer or motor in it.
