I had an eerily similar problem in '99 when I built #771.

I erred in one of the T/R diode bias resistors back in that area; I put in a
100 ohm where a 1k should have been, or something like that.  Pretty similar
results to what you are describing.

Thought it was Q2 and swapped it twice, etc., then looked at the +8T line
and it's FET switch, and so forth.  Took some careful, tedious part-by-part
examination to find the error.  The brown and red looked awfully alike ...

You sound like a guy who knows which end of a soldering iron to pick up, so
I doubt it's your construction quality.

This wrong-resistor scenario might be your problem; might not.  Just
sharing.  Hope it helps.
