[Elecraft] IF outputs from the K2

Issac, I am probably the "someone" you recall. I have modified my K2
to bring out two separate IF signals to input to my Icom IC-756 PRO2.
One output does not use the K2 IF filter, so that compromises the K2
front end performance. It does however, allow the PRO Spectrum Scope
to operate, etc. The other output comes from the AGC mixer/amplifier
and is a much narrower, higher dynamic-range signal than the first
output.
Either output plugs into the Receive Antenna port on the PRO. The PRO
must be tuned to the appropriate frequencies, depending upon which
output is being used and which band the K2 is using. These frequencies
are not the obvious nominal IF frequencies of the K2. Explaining the
procedure for setting all this up on the second receiver is not
trivial, and it is the time required to do that properly that has held
up my preparation of a tech note for the Elecraft website.
After I have done some more work with this down-converter mode of
operation, I will prepare a detailed account of the modification and
the results I have obtained.
Let me close, however, by noting that this down-converter operation is
NOT NECESSARY at all for good performance from the K2. I tried it out
just as an experiment, thinking that there might be some merit in
combining the award-winning front-end performance of the K2 with the
IF-DSP capabilities of the PRO. Thus far, I have found that the
arrangement does work and work well, but the jury is still out with me
as to whether or not the results are worth the effort.
More later - promise! <:}
