Jim,
I bought this PS(MFJ 4125) for the following reasons; The great review it
got in QST, The size was just right for a small shelf in my deer camp
trailer, and it was powerful enough to power an Icom 730 and a two meter
rig. I also used it to power my K2 after I built it. Antennas used are
various dipoles built for specific bands, and a dipole with a 1:1 balun and
tuner at the deer camp for multiband operation. I have used it at field day,
the home shack and the deer camp. All locations were grounded, some better
than others.
There was not any difference in hash at any location, rig used, or antenna
used. It is not band specific, and usually runs between S3-5 as it travels
through the passband. I never noticed hash on VHF FM(only VHF mode I have).
I might also mention that the fan noise was a little more than I would have
liked.
The Alinco so far has been much more pleasent to use. It is extremly quite,
and what noise I have heard has been very low and it has a pot that you can
move the noise out of your passband, although I have not needed to use it.
I do like these supplies for their small size, light weight, and current
capacity. However, I think when possible, I will probably get a linear
supply for the home shack. I had an Astron for years and am sorry I sold it.
You might look back in the July e-mail archives. There was a thread on
Linear vs Switching Supplies that might be useful to you.
It could be that I just got a defective supply since many others have
reported no problems.

George, NC5G
