He talking about mass, not knocks. If you drop the case, the knob torques
the shaft if installed, doesn't if it's elsewhere in the case.

I think a solution for carrying the rig would be to cut out the foam padding
you use for front panel with an Xacto knife to clear the knob, yet cushion
it.

I have some plastic cases, foam lined for various small rigs.
