You don't have to "hack" an HF rig to use it with a transverter. Using
a transverter is also not "forcing" and HF rig to transmit on a
frequency it was not intended for. Using mixers, a transverter simply
converts the Tx and Rx signals between HF and VHF or UHF. The
transceiver doesn't know whether its connected to an antenna or a
transverter.

A transverter can be a good way to get on a band like 6 meters. Your
HF rig (especially the K2) probably has much better performance than
many of the less expensive dedicated 6 meter only rigs. Have you
checked the price of a dedicated, good quality SSB rig for 6 meters?
Its about the same as an all band HF rig. The only VHF rigs that are
relatively inexpensive are the FM rigs.
