[Elecraft] Any benefits to a Long "Long Wire"

After hosting Field Day at our place near the pond I have been thinking 
about putting up a long wire there that would be permanent. It could be 
whatever length I desire. Up to as much as 300 ft.(or longer), although 
maybe not necessarily in a straight line.

Any benefits to this over a shorter wire that is 100 ft. or less. I will be 
using this on 80 through 10 meters. Would I need a counterpoise? Lots of 
iron ore rock here.

Other antenna suggestions?
