[Elecraft] Motorola Speaker VS Bookshelf Speaker ?

OK if the communication speakers are better than bookshelf speakers but
newer also usually means better with respect to speakers. Much progress
has been made in the last few decades. Are there any modern day
equivalents of the Motorola Speaker that are available new ???

Also a peak at 800 Hz may not be the best thing for speech. Wouldn't a
flat response from 300 Hz to 2.4 kHz be ideal for SSB?

Perhaps newer bookshelf speakers are more efficient. The older ones ran
with amplifiers that typically plugged into the AC mains and put out at
least 10 or 20 watts. You might have more luck with one designed to work
with a battery-powered "boom box". The efficiency had more to do, I
believe, with the acoustic design than the speaker driver itself. The
idea behind the bookshelf unit being to reproduce a very wide audio
frequency range. In any event the bookshelf unit would have far more
audio range than you need, which might be a bonus. That's why I tried an
older one I had on hand with my K2.

The 800 Hz peak in the "communications" speakers I found VERY irritating
to listen to over time. But it did give the audio a LOT of "punch" in
noisy environments (emergency vehicles with sirens running, etc.). It
was considered an excellent audio characteristic for that use, but that
was for brief voice communications with good intelligibility, not "easy
listening" by the hour.
