[Elecraft] Motorola Speaker VS Bookshelf Speaker ?

Jim, I'm not sure about the K-2 and a bookshelf speaker (haven't tried
that yet) but my experience with Hi-Fi speakers and comms receivers is
that you get a LOT of useless bass along with the frequencies you want. I
think the reason there's so much excitment about the "Circle M Ranch"
speakers is that they're optimized for the same passband as the human
voice. Not as pinched as a landline circuit, but not as wide as a
20cps-20kcs. speaker. I ran one for years on the handlebars of my H-D,
and the clarity was very good at speeds in excess of 75 MPH, with a stock
Heath HW-202 driving it. Some of the best outboard speakers I've used
(but not practical for taking on a camping trip) are relatively
inexpensive 10-12" so-called "full-range" speakers, mounted in a
wall-hung public-address-type baffle cabinet.
