Hi

I worked for several TV shops many years ago (30+). We never sold anythin=
g but new tubes. The last place I worked I was on straight commission. Up=
to that time I always would diagnose the problem and replace the one or =
two bad tubes make out the bill and go. I got several complaints for not =
doing a through job. The owner of the shop had conditioned the customers =
to expect all of the tubes in the TV to be tested. So I learned to get ou=
t the "little bandit" tube tester and test every tube in the TV. I sold m=
ore tubes and the customer was happy, but I always wondered how long some=
of those "bad" tubes would have worked. The tester was made by B&K. It h=
ad a good-bad meter and a neon lamp that would indicate gas in the tube. =
I would replace the tube if it tested weak or showed gas and you could al=
ways convince the customer by putting a new tube in the tester. I have al=
so seen tubes that tested gassy on the tester work for years. If they sho=
w weak then they needed changing.

I got out of that business as fast as I could and never went back

Or working for the crooked Radio-TV repair shop that sent you out with a
caddy full of bad/weak tubes?

Or sifting through the junk pile at the above shop for transformers, tube
sockets and anything else that you could use?
