Yes they were, George! Pi-net outputs were wonderful because they'd load up
the "bedsprings" if necessary. And the great results we got at times showed
that one can throw away several S-units of power in the feeders or a poorly
situated antenna and still "get out".
It's good to make an antenna system as efficient as possible, but it's
important to remember that even a very "lossy" antenna system can produce
spectacular results when the conditions are right. If that weren't true,
many of us, myself included, might have given up the hobby in frustration
without making a single QSO when we were first starting out.
