For camping and canoeing, etc.
A standard waterproof container for a long time (before Pelican cases and
Cascade DryBags) was an empty olive barrel!
These plastic barrels come in many sizes and are round with a screw lid
top (sort of like a Mason jar lid) with an inner ring and O-ring within
the ring. They work well to store food that you don't want to get wet,
cameras, dry clothes, emergency kit (matches etc), electronics etc. They
float in event of a capsize given a certain amount of air trapped
inside them if not jam packed
full. Can be tied in the boat if you make a harness out of web strapping
(like everything should be if you don't want it to float away or sink).
The barrels are lmost always thrown out by restaurants, I see many in the
Greek
restaurant district as I ride home from work on my 2-wheeler!
The olive barrels were a standard recommendation within Bill Mason's "Path
of the Paddle" and "Song of the Paddle" books (can I say Canoeist
Bibles?), and probably also in one or
more of Cliff Jacobson's (guru) books on canoeing and campnig, and other
sources
as well.
Not to discount a Cascade drybag either as a recommendation .Thick,
somewhat 'padded' and folded over three times and clipped together they do
a good job. One small bag inside a next larger one is small, flat as the
contents allow and does the job. And can be tied in to the canoe via the
folded over Clip-Lock (most of my bags have a plastic D-ring already, but
easy to add alongside the clip.
