Since we in the US are mainly faced with NON-metric screws in virtually
everything domestically manufactured here, it follows that those screws
comprise our primary parts-bins at home, and usually at work. However,
since we frequently have to deal with metric stuff, we need not consult
our pockets... the intelligent home hobbyist, keeps an appropriate
supply of metric screws-or as I must confess I have been known to
frequently do to metric threaded holes: several sizes of screw taps-as
well.
Furthermore, since my own supply of screws/etc. (ALL stainless steel,
mostly [98% Phillips, 85% BHS]) has been the roughly 30-40 lbs
(13.6-18.1 kg) of new-but-surplus (US) MILSPEC / (US) aerospace
screws/hardware/etc. I have sorted through over the past 20 years, it
(my screws/nuts/and bolts supply) is largely composed of NON-metric
screws/etc. I have slowly been buying NEW stainless steel metric
screws/etc. but that's ("buying NEW") and a whole 'nuther ballgame. I
paid less than $2 (EU2.26) / lb (0.45 kg) for the NON-metric surplus
stuff.
