Hi Dave,
Direct frequency entry requires 5 digits in most cases. Some obvious
special cases require only 4 digits: for example, 3xxx-4xxx selects 80
meters. But in the case of 5xxx, it is waiting for a sixth digit--to put
you somewhere on 6 meters. Your K2 doesn't have 6 meters built in (not
many do :) so it will switch you to the next closest band when you hit
that 5th digit, and in this case it's 10 meters. (If you have one of the
transverter bands programmed as 6 meters, you can do in-band direct
frequency entry to 5xxxx, as described in the K2 Rev 2 firmware manual.)
The reason we took this approach is that the VCO won't tune to 5 MHz
anyway. You could try to tune down from 7 MHz to 5 MHz, but the VCO will
lose lock at some point.
