-I can't record the CW messages, when I hold down the 'message' button
for
record, the rig beeps and returns to normal mode. Am I doing anything
wrong?
(firmware is version 2 and using straight key)

---> Will only work with a paddle. The software is not 'intelligent'
enough to know the difference between dits and dahs otherwise (actually,
this is quite difficult, so no blame on the designers!)

-I have noticed that with the audio gain all the way down, strong
stations
still come through, which are just audiable to be annoying whilst the
operator is on another rig. Would it be possible to program in some mute

function? or is it a case of turning down the RF gain as well?

---> You can solve this by doing the AF level control modification. Then
the audio control will turn it off completely. There is also a squelch
function built in that you can set from the menus.

-I understand that the AGC can be set to 'fast' or 'slow', does it
matter
which, what is the difference? (I was told that 'slow' was for SSB and
'fast' for CW)

Here I am not so definite, but my experience is that the fast AGC will
enable you to hear between characters, e.g. other signals. In SSB you
don't want the gain to vary between the strong syllables and the weak
portions of the speech, so the slow AGC should be used.
