Larry,
The most important thing is that they got off safe although I understand
they may have lost some equipment. Congrats on the 40 m contact. I had
that from years ago so didn't try. Having at least one is what counts most.

I got very lucky with them......just last night, finally made the Q on 40
CW. Sounds like it was just in time as they have been contacted by
Braveheart to evacuate the island as of several hours ago. Although the
weather has calmed down, a large berg has broken loose which will block the
exit route very soon. All gear is being left behind at the moment I am
told. Don't know what future plans are.

Congratulations to all who managed to work VP8STI, that was a real
accomplishment. I spent hours calling especially on 30 and 17 meters
without luck. I probably need to take classes because I've lost the touch.
I seemed to be able to copy the VP8 for hours just above my noise which is
better than I can say for K5P where I just couldn't hear him on 30 and 80
beyond being able to tell he was there. Thousands worked K5P so the problem
is mine. Guess I need a K3!
Again, congratulations, especially to those who worked one of both for ATNO.

from DXWorld
NEWS UPDATE @ 21:20Z - Nigel Jolly, Braveheart owner, declared an
emergency and ordered the VP8STI team to cease all operations and return
to the ship. A large ice flow that had broken away due to last night’s
storm starts to block the entrance to the Bay where they were camped.
There was strong potential for the ice flow to prevent Braveheart
reaching them.
The Team is now safely aboard the Braveheart and they are moving away
from Southern Thule Is. All equipment and personal gear is still on the
island. They hope to return to camp site during next good weather
window. Once they retrieve their equipment they could make a
determination as to whether they can proceed to South Georgia to do
VP8SGI as planned – VP8STI QRT !
