Need to Borrow a Keyer!!! OK... First - thank you to all that responded with offers of keyers.? Jim got to me first and offered me a couple and ultimately dropped them off for me to use. Well that is only the start of the story... I am now part of the "mental vacation group".? I have lost my mind, and wherever it has gone, I wish it well and hope that it has a nice relaxing holiday! In my station I use a K1EL WinKeyer.? It has a USB interface so that I can connect it to the computer - especially for contests where the computer does all the work.? One of the significant features of the keyer is that it has two outputs - this is in support of my single op/two radio (SO2R) configuration. ? For some reason - which I cannot remember - I had removed the cables from the back of the keyer.? It is normal to remove the USB connector to reset the keyer but not the other cables. ? But for some reason I removed the key output for Station 1 and plugged it back into Station 2.? So while I as desperately trying to key the radio with CW it was trying to key a radio that was not connected!!!! Once I moved the cable about 0.5 inche to the other output port - everything was back to normal!!! But understand that I did the following: 1) ?Took the box apart three times.2) ?Used the computer to confirm the software and message memories twice.? This was to confirm that this was not alightning strike or a power spike that killed the keyer.3) ?Got out my digital meter to check voltages to see if the Opto Coupler output was fried - only to find out that the 9V batter was dead.? Had to run to the store in the middle of the night to get a battery and install it!4) ?Searched high and low for another keyer5) ?Sent the desperate plea for a keyer to borrow. In all about 5 hours of my time and even more when I consider all the time you spent responding and driving around dropping off keyers! So Jim...? To your question of "did they work"?? Honestly, they never made it out of the bag. ? Damn, I feel quite stupid... The good news is that I worked T2GC on 160M so yes - the station still works - even with a compromised operator. Thanks for all your help.? I owe everyone for jumping through hoops for this. Rick On Fri, Oct 2, 2015 at 7:34 AM, Richard Heinrich wrote: I was too effective in cleaning my shack.? General Chairman Jim Tiderman, N8IDS, is downplaying talk arising from an October 2 television news report and a more extensive and detailed October 3 Dayton Daily News article, that Hamvention might move from Hara Arena as early as next year. Tiderman characterized the reports ?all speculation and rumor.? ?In light of the Cox Media (Channel 7) television interview and the ensuing Dayton Daily News article, I, as General Chairman of the 2015-2016 Dayton Hamvention, want to assure all interested parties that the Dayton Hamvention is fully committed to the 2016 Dayton Hamvention at Hara Arena and Exposition Center, Tiderman stressed in a statement. ?We still keep an open mind to alternate plans, in case they become necessary. All successful businesses need to do that, and Hamvention is no different in that respect.? The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) sponsors Hamvention. The media reports said Dayton area officials have been working together to keep Hamvention in the Dayton area, if not at Hara Arena in Trotwood, where it has been held since 1964. Dayton TV station WHIO reported on October 2 that the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention and Visitors Bureau has been in discussion with the City of Dayton on a plan to ensure that the world?s largest Amateur Radio gathering at least remains in Montgomery County, should Hamvention have to find another venue because of Hara Arena?s financial problems. According to Bureau President and CEO Jacquelyn Powell, this isn?t the first year that officials have considered ?Plan B options,? the WHIO and Dayton Daily News reports indicated. According to the media reports, representatives of the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, Dayton Convention Center, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau will meet this month to review options for Hamvention organizers in the event a move from Hara Arena becomes necessary. Various alternative venues in the Dayton area are reported to have been considered, including the Dayton Convention Center and the Dayton Airport Expo Center, and the Dayton Daily News report said Tiderman has toured both facilities. Also raised was the possibility of holding the indoor exposition and the outdoor flea market at separate locations in the area, and ferrying visitors back and forth with shuttle buses. The Dayton Daily News account said word of Hamvention?s possible move from Hara Arena stemmed from a July e-mail from Karen Wampler, director of Marketing for Hara Arena, which the newspaper obtained through a public records request. The Wampler family owns the 165,000 square foot, six-building complex. ?We have shared the fate of the Trotwood/VenuWorks/Hara acquisition proposal with the [Hamvention] Chairperson and select board members of Hamvention,? Wampler wrote in the e-mail, according to the newspaper report. ?While we have kept them informed throughout the process, they are reeling. They have much to lose with Hara?s closing and, like us, believed we were close to stabilizing Hara for future growth, rather than ending her nearly 60-year run.? Since last year, the Wampler family has been working with VenuWorks, which specializes in restoring event venues, to rejuvenate the deteriorating facility. Karen Wampler acknowledged last winter that Hara was facing financial challenges, flagging revenues, and competition from other Dayton area venues and was exploring ?a new ownership model.? By the time Hamvention 2015 took place last may, ?Sneak Peak? posters in Hara Arena were advertising ?Renovations in 2016? and portraying conceptual sketches of what a refurbished Hara might look like. The newspaper account said that VenuWorks had recommended that the City of Trotwood purchase Hara Arena, but the Trotwood officials turned down the idea. That plan was focus of Wampler?s July e-mail, the Dayton Daily News article said. Wampler subsequently told the newspaper that Hara Arena is in better condition than it was when she drafted her July e-mail and that the event complex will not close anytime soon. Hamvention puts millions of dollars into the local economy each year. Last May, the show attracted some 25,000 visitors. Dayton Hamvention 2016 will take place May 20, 21, and 22. Tiderman told the Dayton Daily News that ?something catastrophic? would have to happen to cause Hamvention to move from Hara Arena. See you on the 30th. 73 Jim NO0B On Sat, 10 Oct 2015 06:39:23 -0500, wrote: > Send EIDXA mailing list submissions to > eidxa at mailman.qth.net > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/eidxa > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > eidxa-request at mailman.qth.net > > You can reach the person managing the list at > eidxa-owner at mailman.qth.net > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of EIDXA digest..." The catch is that they are in Yangon, Myanmar (XZ). I am heading over there on Oct 22nd. I would like to take two hand keys and code oscillators with me AND LEAVE THEM THERE for the boys to practice. There is a VU2 ham that is a teacher at the school where the scout troop is located. But, his resources are very limited. If any of you guys have a hand key and/or code oscillator in your junk box and would not mind parting with them, please let me know. Off list email: tnvinson1 at gmail dot com. We'll figure out the best way to obtain them prior to packing/departure. I am ordering a few kits for building purposes. I also have a couple of amateur radio related DVD's from ARRL. I view this as an opportunity to get some Burmese kids interested in Amateur Radio. It will be a long haul. The military govt does not yet allow an amateur service. There have been minor cracks in their stance. Zorro, JH1AJT received DXpedtion permission a year ago. (It took years, relationships/contacts, and money) There is now a Swedish group planning/hoping to get onto some of the outer islands next year. I would love to take an HF radio over, but that is problematic at this time due to the above situation. This opportunity arose very quickly so my apologies for such a short call out! 73 Tom, NY0V From rhaendel at q.com Tue Oct 13 08:41:24 2015 From: rhaendel at q.com (Rich Haendel) Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2015 07:41:24 -0500 Subject: [EIDXA] CQ WW SSB contest Oct 23-25. I had four objectives: assist in the assembly of a new station console at, fix the RFI in their new (inverter-based high efficiency) air conditioner, operate a bit and finally, scope out Willemstad for a possible vacation spot (most likely following a contest). I came home yesterday after having achieved all of them. The crate arrived on the island ahead of me by a week but customs issues kept it tied up until Tuesday (Oct 13) noon. It wasn't my issue to worry about so I went ahead with my other jobs. First I attacked the AC. Solid 10 over noise across 20m. It's a Westinghouse Inverter unit, meaning they run the compressor with a square wave generator. I confirmed the noise was there only when the compressor ran by tuning my HT to 14MHz and sniffing with a short piece of coax. The manufacturer has installed two ferrite beads on the line to the motor. I disconnected the connectors on the motor lead and the leads to the fan motor because both came from the inverter box and appeared to be radiating. I twisted the wires together and added a couple beads and did a check. I heard no noise and thought I'd broken the AC. A quick check revealed that I'd silenced it well enough it's no issue. I added a few beads for good measure, taped it all in Scotch 33 and closed it up. I wouldn't have been able to do this without the invaluable help of KC9UMR when I had to debug my own heat pump this spring. The trip to town was nice. Willemstad is an urban (the only) center on the island and not a resort town. It would be a good place to kick for a couple days but it's not a week+ destination like Maui. Operating was fun. I was kind of lazy as I did only 1000 Qs. EU is very loud at night in 40m, as was I ( used some beam up on some tower - I didn't ask for details). Rates were 120/hour on the 2nd night on 40m. Conditions weren't as good and I had to piece together a lot of calls from partials. Rates on 15/20m were more like 140-160/hour. I'm surprised I was so busy given how "not rare" this island is, but I enjoyed the pileups. You can lose track of time very quickly in that environment. Console went together as expected except for a minor problem that required a trip to the hardware store for a new blade for their Skil saw. When I left N0YY and W0CG were busily building wire harnesses and installing equipment. Or knows someone that could be my mentor on this issue? What I am looking for is how do I need to interface the Acom, Icom, Ham radio deluxe, Rig Expert TI-5 and a 2nd rig? I have an Icom CT-17 civ level controller. It doesn't want to play at all with the amp but everything else works. When the amp cat system is plugged into the ct-17 it has a loud high pitch noise when the amp is turned off, but when plugged directly into the amp to radio the sound disappears or when the amp is turned on. Acording to Jay at Array Solutions he hasn't seen or heard of this problem before so he can't help me out. No one else is doing what I am doing. This is hard to believe. Sounds like passing the buck to me. I guess everyone that owns a Acom 2000A amp plugs it directly into the radio and doesn't use a logging program or interfaces with anything else or has a separte computer system. I was confused about the plug on the CAT system. It had a tip, ring and ground and the civ level has only tip and ground. But it's still TTL coming out the back of the RCU controller. Jay's only sugestion was split the remote line coming out the back of the rig, but that's still TTL signal. He told me to call back when I find out the problem. Back before my storm filled summer here I had my Icom 7800, DX4WIN, Rig Expert TI-5 and M2 rotor all hooked up and it played very well together. My old amp was an Alpha 76 CA. This reminds me of computer stuff. New operatoring system nothing works until drivers and other things are replaced or upgraded. Maybe need to call DX Engineering where I bought the rig and see what they think or their sugestions are since Array Solutions is not helping. Maybe subscribe to the yahoo group and see what they think too? Where's the good old customer service at anymore? Service after the sale not before. An important part of moving to a new QTH is grounding and bonding. One of the things I did in my professional life was teach grounding and bonding to audio and video professionals. Here's my tutorial on the topic focusing on techniques applicable to ham radio. http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf I moved into a new QTH 10 years ago. It was out in the country, but it was very noisy. Over the following year or so, I discovered that grounding and bonding was a disaster -- it violated very rule in the book. Once I corrected those fundamental errors, it's now pretty quiet most of the time. 73, Jim K9YC _________________ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband From rhaendel at q.com Thu Oct 29 08:46:13 2015 From: rhaendel at q.com (Rich Haendel) Date: Thu, 29 Oct 2015 07:46:13 -0500 Subject: [EIDXA] Dues Message-ID: <56321515.1040001@q.com> Hello all, David, K0LUM, will be collecting annual dues on my behalf as I will not be able to attend.
