Tom,

While I don't remember the talk, the professor might have been Don Gurnett of the UI physics department. He is a ham, and he has given several talks to the Iowa City Amateur Radio Club over the years, so he could have also done one for EIDXA.

It's nice to know you're still with us. I had forgotten where in AZ you ended up.

Nelson, KU0A

Hello Tom,

I was just reading your EIDXA newsletter, quite a production. Seems like Kirkwood should just re-name the Amana room to the EIDXA room!

As like most of us, my memory tends to get a little fuzzy over time. I seem to recall that at one of our club meetings we had a talk by a U of IA professor about using tall towers as a lightning prevention system at Cape Canaveral. One thing I think I remember is his statement that a properly installed tower can provide some lightning protection for a radial distance 10 times the height of the tower.

Do you recall this or can you canvas the members and find what they remember? Even better would be the name of the professor so I can look on line and see if I can find his research. I will appreciate it.

When the subject of ham towers comes up I use this as an argument in favor of allowing such structures. The few times back we tried to get something through the state legislature to allow towers, but the HOA lobbyists and one state senator in particular managed to block it every time. Of course I don’t think the amateur representatives put forth a very good argument either.

Always nice to hear a few of you on the air from time to time. I am scheduled to go on another DXpedition in March to a location in NE Africa ( sorry an official announcement hasn’t been made) so I will be sure to listen for you fellows.
