Pretty impressive video! Here is a very short video produced by Willis Island DXpedition VK9WA team co-leader Jared Smith N7SMI and posted to YouTube earlier today. It is from video taken by Captain Peter Sayre of our charter boat, the MV Phoenix with his quad copter / GoPro. This video literally gives a bird's eye view of our isolated 4-acre home in the Coral Sea for 12-days where our team manned 4 amateur (ham radio) stations and was successful in making over 60,000 radio contacts with other hams around the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBuKxCkfTnQ 73, Joe ? A few years ago we ran an EIDXA Marathon with the intent of having members be active, work some new ones and submit to CQ. Participation was somewhat low and I tried to spice things up by having a few different tops score displays. One idea I had was to help some of the associate members, or members who have just crested the 100 mark put more in the log and still shine. In addition to maintaining: Mode (RTTY/CW/Phone) Total worked for high-scores displayed, what if we did one for ATNO? This, as with everything, would be honor-system. Each time folks uploaded their log for the totals, they could put in the number of ATNO's they've gotten up to that point. My thinking is that for folks who aren't running KW's and beams, but who are getting more in the log that they've never worked before; sure you may only work 100 stations the whole year; but what if 50 of those are ATNO for you? Thats a big big deal. My thoughts would be to encourage participation from everyone; I know we had some pretty big scores (including a top 3 international), but I wondered if those were a bit intimidating to more normal members. I haven't poked around the new spreadsheets to see about parsing them and auto-generating a tops-list as we had before, that would take a bit of time; but I wanted to re-float the idea to see if it was worth investing any time. Is there anythiing else reasonable that folks feel would get them to play? 73's Joe KC0VKN From radiojoe_k8om at msn.com Mon Dec 21 11:13:17 2015 From: radiojoe_k8om at msn.com (Joe Hungate - K8OM) Date: Mon, 21 Dec 2015 10:13:17 -0600 Subject: [EIDXA] CQ Marathon In-Reply-To: <20151220202257.GD17279@homer> References: <20151220202257.GD17279@homer> Message-ID: Hi Joe, I participated in this a couple of years and had a blast! As you said, this operating activity is an excellent way for the smaller pistol stations to pickup some ATNO, band slots and get some practice busting fairly significant pileups. My suggestion is that we try to get associate members active through encouragement, mentoring, opening up our stations for guest operations and help putting antennas up. Who can be the first to go from 0 to 100 countries???? Who can be first to do it with 100 watts and a diploe??? Maybe special awards could be procured for different achievements. Without a doubt, everyone would be welcome to participate and represent EIDXA but focusing on helping our current associate members and maybe recruiting additional associate members would be fantastic. Those are my thoughts..... hopefully others will chime in also. I'll put this on the agenda for our next EIDXA meeting on January 22. I suppose either way; the best option (since the next one is 1/22) is to start working them 00:00: 01/01/2016, even if nothing comes together for EIDXA to score. One of my initial thoughts was for a single traveling trophy for some aspect. Everything kind of died on the vine (looking back at previous numbers, they were relatively low): http://host.bitjanitor.net/~jhetrick/eidxa.php Here is a link to the official CQ rules: http://www.dxmarathon.com/ Now, I haven't done any coding to bring what we had before up to date with the current spreadsheets; I don't know that I would go that route again, anyway. To be perfectly honest; keeping ahead of bugs in spreadsheets become very tiresome. It would almost be easier for folks to enter just their totals than for me to tally them out of the sheets.
