I've been a ham for 50 years now and have at one time or another operated
most of the amps listed. I basically concur with his comments. I thought
the Alpha 87A was one of the cleanest and most effecient amps ever built.
It didn't tolerate much SWR and the PIN diodes were a pain, however. I've
had a couple Henry amps and would still have them if they did 160M....
With the recent big price reductions in the ACOM line, they are probably the
best bang for the buck now.
I don't know KK5DR, but after looking at his QRZ.com listing..... Maybe
just as well......

P.S. Weren't the old BTI amps built in Des Moines, or am I thinking of
another?

This review is one hams opinion on various HF amplifiers and I think it is
quite useful if you are about to buy a used or new amp. Or even if you are
curious. Check it out:

I've communicated with Matt over past 10 years and he does know a lot about
the topic but I would still seek other opinions.
