Jason has been working hard to get our group and others in Iowa ready for
our participation in the ARRL Centennial event. It is hard getting
commitments in place for this event - there is no precedence or guidance
on how to meet the need.
I thought I might provide a reference point as you work with other
organizations and individuals to get commitment for this effort. I
received this today from the Society of Midwest Contesters (SMC). I am in
now way pushing, cajoling, pressuring, etc. But want to provide you with
a tool to help sell the concept.
Subject: [SMC] W1AW/9 Numbers
For the W1AW/9 Wisconsin operation, we had 47,349 QSOs. There were a
number of duplicate QSOs, due to operators chasing counties, etc., but we
counted them since they were all valid QSOs. Excluding the ARRL DX CW
contest (checklog), we had 42,686 QSOs.
The previous high QSO total was set by Texas with about 35,000 QSOs. Most
states are averaging around 25,000, give or take a few thousand.
I have ordered a SH5 key (SH5 is a log analysis tool) and will generate
the
reports and share the link to the info when it's available.
I would like to thank our team for an impressive accomplishment. They did
an outstanding job, greatly exceeding my expectations, and then some. I
would like to make a special mention of one of our newest SMC members,
Lloyd N9LB for a job well done, great butt-in-chair time, and nice QSO
totals.
Thanks SMC for your QSOs and support.

Quick analysis illustrates that there were 19 operators that accounted for
those 47,000 QSOs. That is an average of 2,473 QSOs per person. We know
that is not correct because WE9V made 9000 of those Qs himself - he took
vacation time to operate! Even with that adjustment, the average for the
other 18 operators was 2100 Qs!
Even if we play by the other regional level of effort we find an average
of about 1,000 QSOs per participant assuming 20-ish players.
What do you think? Are ready to play? Let's get radio active.

p.s. An interesting side note - K9GS operated his Wisconsin station
remotely from Arizona!!! Gary found a way to beat the cold weather!
