Hello Bruce,
Thanks very much for the reply!
~ If you're sweeping AM if's then Eico stuff won't do, it doesn't go low
enough.
I printed out the manual for the Eico #315 signal generator while I was
waiting for a response from the Eico reflector. According to the manual, the
#315 goes down to 75 kc and up to 150 mc (an ancient, self-explanatory unit
of measure). I think it's a bit of a misnomer to call it a "sweep generator"
though, since "sweeping" seems to consist of turning a knob.
~ I use an HP 3325a function generator, which works great for both AM as
well as FM & being able to sweep way down to 1 hz so you can also sweep
audio to observe its response. Usually about $200-$300.00 on ebay working.
I love HP test equipment! I have used it at work, and owned it and used it
at home. In fact I worked for a while as a tech for HP "back in the day".
However, having taken the vows of poverty by committing myself to being a
classical guitar maker, it's too expensive to buy for my ham hobby.
I think I have figured out a method of getting a nice graph of the passband
of a tuned circuit at frequencies within the range of a general coverage
communications receiver. It would use an RF signal generator, a microphone,
a PC with sound card, and a free audio spectrum analysis program. I can
explain the layout if anyone is interested.
A general sort of question: I'm sure there are Eico loyalists and Heathkit
loyalists. In RF signal generators would there be any reason for choosing
one brand over the other? I see that the Eico has a 400 Hz modulation
feature.
Cheers,
Brian Burns
