Briggs, Which Eico's did you get?
I had a 720/730 in the old days. I was WN2NDJ then WB2NDJ in Chatham NJ in '63 or so. 1.5 yrs ago I bought a 720 and I have not gotten it running yet. It has spurious output at 60 watts or so but it is not on a frequency that I can find so something is just oscillating. This means the final tube is probably good though. I suspect the oscillator stage itself is not correct. I enjoying working on the tube stuff in the winter and may get back to it. I also had a Drake 2B back then and I bought an estate sale one that was pretty good but needed new caps. I bought the kit from http://www.hayseedhamfest.com/capkit.htm and it now works perfect with new caps and one new crystal that was dead. I also had a Knight Kit VFO and I found one and it is working. I need the 730 and they are hard to get at any reasonable price so the AM may never happen but I want to try the 720 some more till I get it on CW anyway with the 2B. Manuals can generally be found online and lots of help is available if you have specific questions just ask.
Some of my projects are in my blog archives at the link below..
quired a nice pair of old boat anchor Eico's and am anxious to put them back on the air (primarily 75/40m AM). As I will be re-capping both units as part of my restoration, I am wondering what other "mods" anyone might suggest for high quality AM audio and overall RF performance. I used a 720 back in my early 60's Novice days but am generally unfamiliar with these old rigs. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Tnx in advance!
