A 5U4 is slightly less beefy (more droop when keying)
but works fine in my Eico 720.

Russki/Chinese 5AR4's/GZ34's are available from all the web tube suppliers.
e.g. www.tubesandmore.com

Replacing with silicon diodes is very straightforward and will give
you more voltage on the plates while keying.
