I've got a 720 and I'm pretty sure the front of mine (including the
copper lip) is covered in some sort of varnish. There's some dark
spots underneath the varnish on mine too but I've never worried about them.
When I've cleaned up copper-plated chassis in the past (generally
for electrical conductivity) I've used kitchen copper cleaners with
success. Of course without any coating the exposed copper never
stays clean for very long, but at least the star washer under the
screw is now connected to ground :-).
