The power went off for a few hours yesterday. The UPS keep my logging computer running for a while but not as long as usual. DXbase was not shutdown correctly. When I powered it back on and ran DXbase the columns were not correct for many windows and I had to un-hide many. There were many other issues so I finally uninstalled and reinstall DXbase. Now all the windows are correct and my log looks okay. The problem I can't fix is that DXbase does not read the frequency of the radio correctly. The serial port is set to 19200, N81 the same as it was. I have the same Icom 7600 configuration file being used. DXbase will set the frequency of the radio okay, but when it reads it, it has 47GHz.? 

I checked the operation of the radio with the N1MM contesting program. That program reads and writes the frequency correctly.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can check?
I will be buying a new UPS battery.

Never mind.
Just a few minutes after I sent the note below I found the check box that says to read the frequency from the radio.
Problem solved.

I have decided to abandon DXBase since it looks like it will never get a
decent upgrade. We have been strung along ever since Jack sold it to Neal.
I am looking at either DX4Windows or Ham Radio Deluxe. I do want to thank
Joe for all the help he has provided in the past and say that if it wan't
for him I would have been gone a long time ago.

After knowing now that the future of DXbase is truely dead, I want
all who want to stay with DXbase2007 - knowing that the current
DXbase2007 is the final version - to know that I am staying with
DXbase2007 myself!  

The reasons for my staying with DXbase2007 is that:

(1)  I can help anyone else who is going to stay with DXbase2007.
(2)  I can still program standalone utilities, reports, etc for DXbase2007.
(3)  At my age (72 yrs) - and with my Operating habits - DXbase2007
is good enough for me. I tried all of the other logging programs and just
can not find one that is even close to what DXbase2007 offers.

I will NOT hope for any further versions of DXbase - as after Neal's ownership
of DXbase for the past going on 7years - and promises that just never come
about - I have to totally given up any hope.

NOTE!!  I may be kicked-off the DXbase Reflectors, for what I am saying here
 - so, when I say my 73's below - it might really be 73's.

Although I am very disappointed with not getting the promised upgrades / new version of DxBase  I am going to tag along with Joe on this one..



Many of the reasons that Joe gives are the same for me ? Like Joe I am 73 years old and I don?t think my operating practices are going to change that much.. I have but 2 countries left to get so filling in the different bands and modes are my priorities and DxBase will do that and more for me.. I am not about to start out on a new path at this stage of the game and even if I were younger and had many more countries to chase down ? Dxbase has served me well up to this point and I can honestly say that I am sure that it would do the same for anyone wanting to be a casual or serious DX?er..

Joe,
Thanks for the help you have given me and everyone else over the years. I am staying with DXbase because I know how to use it and t does what I want. I have been able to use the comments and special-1 fields to keep track of the NPOTA contacts I have made.

A couple of years ago I picked out a replacement logging program and imported to it. It did not have the correct number of countries worked and confirmed after the import. So I decided to stay with DXBase and not try to fix the problem in the other program.

The reasons for my staying with DXbase2007 is that:

(1)? I can help anyone else who is going to stay with DXbase2007.
(2)? I can still program standalone utilities, reports, etc for DXbase2007.
(3)? At my age (72 yrs) - and with my Operating habits - DXbase2007
is good enough for me. I tried all of the other logging programs and just
can not find one that is even close to what DXbase2007 offers.

I will NOT hope for any further versions of DXbase - as after Neal's ownership
of DXbase for the past going on 7years - and promises that just never come
about - I have to totally given up any hope.

NOTE!!? I may be kicked-off the DXbase Reflectors, for what I am saying here
 - so, when I say my 73's below - it might really be 73's.

YES!? While Neal is on his vacation - if anyone has a requirement for
a DXbase2007 reg file (new or changed) - I can help you out directly.
Neal gave me the EXE program that MAKES the reg file - so that I
could help people out and not have to bug him each time that I
needed to make a REG file here at my QTH.

Please add me to the list too. While I guess I'm one of the younger users (66!), I plan on staying with DXBase. It still does everything I need and a whole lot more (maybe I should read the manual). 

Also, sincerest thanks for your call and help in fixing my corrupted log file. You are a life saver!

I am not surprised that no upgrade is coming again. I am 62 and could do
the learning curve with another program I am sure. But since I use
DXBase2007 for qsling and award tracking only, I am probably not as
affected as others. Yes, it does what I need in those areas. But there are
a lot of "tweaks" I wish we could see. The tweaks would have nothing to do
with a major upgrade.

I did download DX Labs a few years ago but decided against doing the
learning curve. If I had done my logging and sending via DXBase2007 I would
have probably stayed with DX Labs. I know many DXBase users who went that
route several years ago and are quite pleased. There are other programs out
there of course that one could use. I just find it very disturbing at what
has happened the past 7 years with the promised upgrades, etc. I would not
do business in the real world with a company that has this kind of track
record.

Joe, I'm sticking with DXB.  Took me a long time to learn what I needed 
to know.  It does everything I need done at this point.  My requirements 
are simple.  Stats and logging plus interface with DXCluster.  The 
reports are nice and some of the searches are helpful.  LOTW was a 
little awkward at first but I've figured that out.

I've been a DXbase user since the days of DOS and when DXB was supplied on a 5" floppy and came with a great spiral bound book!? The original program was fantastic if you were aserious DXer and remains so today.? It has been made t look pretty spiffy, but all in all it isall I could ask for.? Talking to Jack was like talking to a wall,? way back Joe came to my rescueand resolved a problem in the original software that had to do with CW contacts prior to 1974.Thank you Joe!? HI.? Later I mentioned a problem on the list and Joe looked me up and calledme on the telephone on his nickel, forget what it was but once again got it fixed.? Since therehave been several times when I've messed up the data base and Joe has fixed it one wayor another.
Without Joe I would have likely given up years ago.? He is the man when it comes to printer problems, label creation, etc, etc.? I once had a personalized QSL label where I printed athumb nail, color pix of my shack on the label? --? with the help of Joe of course!

Lots of noise about missed deadlines but when I booted up DXBase this 
morning it still worked! The sky didn't fall overnight.  Back to 
listening to QRM on the radio instead of the internet.

Interestingly I never found Jack to be uncommunicative.  Maybe he felt 
sorry for me.  :))))  I started with the first version in DOS too.  I 
had a tough time with the transition to Windows as I was not a Windows 
user.  I'm slightly better now but I have hacked my way through the 
program in terms of what I need to know.  Most of this help came from 
Jack before Joe was on the scene.  I admire Joe's work and I'm glad he 
is here.  However, I don't qualify for his assistance based on his 
warnings regarding knowledge of Windows.  I'm not criticizing but I'm 
personally not there yet.  I do read everything he has to say here.  
Maybe some of it will rub off.

I think I'm safe for the rest of my lifetime unless something very 
strange happens with Windows which is a possibility.

Speaking of strange and somewhat off-topic, has anyone had the hidden 
patch that MS sends out to Windows 7 users that automatically installs 
Windows 10 on your computer without your knowledge?  It happened to me 
and it happened to a friend.  I was able to abort the installation and 
also found out which update contained the patch based on research.  It 
was on all my machines.  I removed it and told my computers to let me 
choose patches instead of having it happen automatically.

In my opinion, what MS is doing with this is no different than some 
hacker engaging my computer.

In Neil's defense -?never meant to?imply Neil wasn't helpful.? There were a few timeshe came to my rescue and volunteered his time and bailed me out.? Always a gentlemanas well.? From a business standpoint I don't think I don't think there was much of a potentialof making much money maintaining or attempting to improve DXbase which already wasabout as good as it gets!? HI?

I should mention that Neil has personally helped me out with a problem 
too.  I called and he spent some time with me regarding a problem with 
Windows 7 installation.  In fact, a lot of time.  I offered to pay him 
for his time and he wouldn't take anything.  It is what it is.  Things 
don't always work out the way we expect them to.  I'm happy with DXB.

I guess the good news with DXBase is that it fits in the "if it's not
broken, don't fix it" category. Thanks to Joe, there are plenty of
workarounds, additions, repairs, troubleshoots, etc. I'm with the majority
of users on here, it's a familiar, well designed program that does most
everything I need.

Joe, you just have to live forever to keep this program humming along for
the group. ;-)

Double dittos on about all that has been said,  I like the screen layout of
DX base or would have been gone long ago,  I had a note written earlier
but deleted it and I see most have the same thoughts so no use venting
here.   People get in over their heads all the time,  so this is nothing 
new,
its a shame as the product is top of the line in its day.

DXbase serves me well yet even with all the hoop jumping and thanks to 
Joe and
his added programs it does the job I need done.

If you are making a list Joe please add me to it,  not enough words to 
express

As a user since the early DOS days and creator of the first labels for the 
"new" windows version, I will stay with DXbase for the foreseeable future. I 
visited Jack at his Atlanta QTH several times and received a lot of help 
both in person and via the internet.

I also assisted Jack at his booth at Dayton a few times. To abandon DXbase 
now would seem like abandoning Jack.

I recently moved and haven't been active for quite awhile, but I still 
peruse my DXbase logs and reminisce.

Neil,

Think we have stumbled into an old sore spot that dates back years ago 
with some of the gray hairs on the list. There was once a time that 
criticism would have resulted in a "Banned from Boston" edict on the 
DXBase mailing list. Will not go into details but that is the baggage 
that came with DXBase. On the other hand, some of the comments that have 
been directed to you over the last couple were totally out of line. You 
have a tougher skin than I do.

Hi All, 

I've been with DXBASE since DOS 3.0. 

It still does ALL I need, and I will stay with DXBASE, at least in the
foreseeable future. 

Maily of three reasons : 

1. It already does what I need. 

2. I always got help from Joe and Neal whenever requested. 

3. Learning a new program takes to much of my time.
 Keep It Simple (KISS).
 I like to spend my Hamradio time operating. 

A special thanks to Joe for all the help he provides us all !

Let me raise this possibility.  It appears that Neal is unable to put in 
the necessary time to  upgrade or update the software, and he may be 
agreeable to sell the program rights etc.  I would think that if Joe 
would be agreeable he could turn this ship around and head it in the 
right direction.  If joe was agreeable to this I would suggest that with 
so many wanting to "hang in there" they would be willing to contribute 
to the purchase.

I would think that first, Joe would have to agree in principal then he 
could contact Neil and see if he would be willing to sell and if so at 
what price.

I am just throwing this up on the table as a possibility.

I also started with DXBase back in the Dos days and remember Jack and 
another gentlemen started DXBase. I do not recall the other persons name 
and there also was a YL who was available to solve problems during the 
daytime when the two founders were at work.  I will also say that I left 
DXBase over four years ago but have always kept up with the web page 
keeping informed, DXBase has always had a soft spot with me from it's 
conception.  Over the years I had many conversations with Jack about my 
problems and always always found him to be ready to help, and that he did.

I will also say that once Neal purchased the software Joe was also my 
night in shining armor and would also come to my aid either via email or 
phone calls.  Joe you have kept this software alive, now it needs you to 
save it.

Sorry Pete - I am not agreeable to your proposal. 
I can program Bridges, Standalone exe programs, etc -
But, I do not have the talent to take-on a full-blown program
like DXbase!

Here is a serious question.  What could be done to improve DXB besides 
making it native to the latest operating systems?  The only thing I can 
think of is perhaps a simpler LOTW interface but I'm used to the way it

Besides a LoTW interface, an eQSL and Club Log interface would be nice. In
the existing qsling/award tracking area; to be able to index on more fields
(some would call them columns) would sure be nice and more current type
choices in the QSL Via drop down list. Those are just some examples.

Agree with Joe on LoTW, Club Log and EQSL plus...

I'd like to see support for QRZ XML. I purchased HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) for
DM-780 and have been testing their logging program. It uses QRZ's "live" XML
call sign database to fill in Name, City, address etc. in the QSO/QSL info
blocks. You can also choose to have a popup of the new contacts QRZ page.

QRZ has also discontinued their download and CD database service. The most
popular logging programs are now including as an option XML service for Ham
call and QRZ. With the XML service you get the latest call sign data base
because your pulling it off the QRZ internet site. This would be an option
feature you could choose to use.

I also believe there is an active list of LoTW stations that are available
for download. HRD uses it with the DX cluster display noting an "L" for a
station that confirms with LoTW.  It updates the LoTW list almost every time
you use the program. It would be a nice feature to add LoTW to the DX Base
Summary window.

machine now. My dxbase version on my XP 
machine is 1.05 and my reg file is from 2007. 
Can I use this on the new machine or do I

THIS IS NOT the case!!  

Neal has already advised that he is not going to delete me from the DXbase Reflector(s)!

Again - while Neal is on vacation until June 16, 2016, I am available to ALL DXbase2007 users,

 Just a heads-up about a callsign that are in the AMBIGUOUS category for Prefixes ...

Just saw that the callsign TO972M from Martinique on 28-29 May 2016. 
This callsign will default to France(F) because of the Alias Map table mapping.

This callsign is not currently MAPPED in the CALLMAP table -- so, if you want,
simply make a dummy QSO with this callsign and change the PREFIX column
of your logbook mdb file to FM and then when the pop-up asks you if you want
to save this TO972M mapped to FM -- say YES/OK ---- Then delete that dummy QSO ..

The CALLMAP table will now be updated in advance so that if you work this
station -- it will have the correct PREFIX in your logbook QSO window ...
