In  my  DXbase2007 master file I want to select a group of QSO's identified
as  SKCC in the Special-2 Column and export them in an adi file then import
them into my SKCC logging software. I've tried several methods
unsuccessfully. Can someone tell me how to do this?

 Ron,

Since you already have identified the QSOs with SKCC in the
Special-2 column,

Go to Tools/ Selection Wizard /

and in the Selection Wizard setup the "Output Type" as "ADIF File" .. now. press the QSO Filters button
Now, in the QSO Filters Window make a CHECKMARK next to the "Special - 2" .. and .. make the
Special - 2 = SKCC

Exit the QSO Filters window - and Start the routine ...

You now have your adi file ... The above steps are for "if you want ALL of the current SKCC
flagged" QSOs.

Just a heads-up about a callsign that are in the AMBIGUOUS category for Prefixes ...

 Just saw that the callsign TO5BR from French Guiana will be active 
 on 10-23 March 2015. This callsign will default to France (F) 
 because of the Alias Map table mapping.
 
 This callsign is not currently MAPPED in the CALLMAP table -- so, if you want,
 simply make a dummy QSO with this callsign and change the PREFIX column
 of your logbook mdb file to FY and then when the pop-up asks you if you want
 to save this TO5BR mapped to FY -- say YES/OK ---- Then delete that dummy QSO ..
 
 The CALLMAP table will now be updated in advance so that if you work this
 station -- it will have the correct PREFIX in your logbook QSO window ...

Ron,

Should be simple.  Go to Tools/Selection Wizard...  On the Selection Wizard 
screen set the Output Type drop box to "ADIF File" and then click on the 
Test only box.  Now click on the QSO Filters button where you will be 
presented a variety of filter options.  Make sure all the check boxes are 
cleared.  Now in the far right hand side column click the check box for 
Special - 2 = and type SKCC into the adjacent box.  Now click on OK to 
return to the main Selection Wizard screen.  Double check that the Test only 
box is checked and then click on Start.

A window will open asking you to provide a File name for the ADIF file you 
intend to create.  Give it a meaningful name like "SKCC extract" and click 
on Open.  Now a window will tell you "This file doesn't exist" and ask if 
you want to "Create this file?".  Click on Yes and the same window will open 
and ask you the question a second time.  This is a bug in DXBase, just 
ignore it and answer Yes again.  Finally a window will open and ask if you 
are going to submit this file to LOTW and do you want to mark your records 
in DXBase that these records have been exported to LOTW?  Answer No to this 
one and the Test run of your selection filter will begin.

As the Wizard works its way through your data base file it shows the 
progress and how many QSO Records matching the selection filter have been 
found so far.  At the end of the Test run look at how many QSO Records were 
found.  If this seems reasonable uncheck the Test only box and Start the 
process again.  This time a window will open showing you a list of target 
file names.  Since your Test run created an empty SKCC extract file, select 
that file name.  Again the window asking about marking the records as being 
exported to LOTW will open and again click No.  This time the Wizard will 
actually export all the SKCC records found and save them in your SKCC 
extract adi file.  You can now import this file into your SKCC logger.

I want to inform you that, after using DXBase for years (since Dos), 
last months I had to
abandon it in favor of another more modern and updated software; for 
this reason I also
leave the list of DXBaseUsers. I would like to thanks Jack AA4LU to have

I have been using the "help" function in both my Win 8.1 64 bit and Win 
7 32 bit computers with no problem. This morning I went to use the help 
file on either computer and I get an error message "Failed to launch help".
Then the "Windows Help and Support screen comes up on either one.

Any idea?

I checked my Win 764 bit and win 8 64 bit and win7 32 bit machnes -- and
the F1 key brings up Windows Help - not the DXbase Help -- 

BUT, I can go to DXbase main menu HELP / Help Topics .. and by this
method DXbase is fully opened all ok ... 

I have all of my computers uptodate with Windows Updates ..

I also have a 64 bit Win 7 machine, and went through the steps to active 
the help files.  My machine automatically updates windows when ever 
there is an update.  I have no trouble opening the help files from the 
DXBase menu.

I'm recovering from a failed disk. The disk corruption affected my 
DXBase data base in such a way that it has (at least) lost all of the 
confirmed entities. When I try to reinitialize the tables, I'm presented 
with a popup that says "No current record" and the initialize tables 
process hangs. I have an older backup that is intact, but it's missing 
all of my most recent activity (several hundred QSOs) that has a lot of 
new countries.

What's the best way to add in the missing QSOs? Should I try to export 
the subset of new QSOs and then import them into the older but intact 
data base?

The ldb file is just a "lock" saying that a program has the mdb database
open. When you quit the program, it removes the ldb file.

The stats are in the log itself.

I would create a new log file, then quit DXBase, open up the DXBase Import
program and import the old log into the newly created one. Then run DXBase
with the new log and recalculate your statistics.

Good news, Neal: your suggestion worked! All now seems well.

My latest disk failure was one of the most insidious I've seen. I was 
tipped off because I kept getting errors when I tried to backup my disk 
via a clone operation. I usually simply clone the whole thing so that 
restoring it is as simple as swapping out the bad disk, which I'll have 
to do anyway. But my clone jobs always failed at the same place. 
S.M.A.R.T. data revealed nothing noteworthy (one read failure), but I 
kept getting notices that I had to run chkdsk and when I did, clusters 
were reassigned.

But, everything seems to be fine, now.

ALL:

I have been trying to help W0VB (Terry) with his not being able
to get the HELP FILES to work on his Windows 7 64bit machine..

I linked up with him via TeamViewer and made sure that the
Winhlp32.exe was installed all ok -- and he did not have the ENABLE
MACROS setup yet -- so, we did the install of that ..

NOW - normally, after doing both of these actions, the HELP FILES
work beautifully.. 

BUT - in this case, NADA!!!! Tried and tried many things - but still nothing
of the Help Files appearing at all ..

Then - today - I played with my own Windows 7 64bit machine to see
WHAT file(s) might be created by the user going into the HELP / Help Topics..

Sure enough - a file named as: Dxb2007.GID was created ... looking at the
Internet for what the heck is a GID file -- I found it is a Windows Global Index file.
So, I closed DXbase2007 and deleted the current Dxb2007.GID file -- then
opened DXbase2007 back up and went to the Help/ Help Topics -- and once
again a NEW Dxb2007.GID file was created ..

SO - as a shot-in-the-dark, I sent an email to W0VB (Terry) telling him about THAT file -- 
and was BLOWN AWAY when he answered back that once he delete the Dxb2007.GID
file -- and opened DXbase2007 again -- then went to the Help / Help Topics 
--- VOILA !!! He HAS the HELP FILES all ok ...

I send this info out to all - just in case you HAVE installed the Winhlp32.exe file and 
also have successfully ENABLED MACROS -- but, you still can not get the Help files
to come up -- try the above!!!!!

If you go to the device manager and look at the driver for your USB-serial
adapter, I bet the driver shows you are using a Prolific chipset.

You just need to buy a USB to serial adapter using FTDI chipsets and you
will be okay!

WE NEED YOUR HELP on this one ...  There are only two steps that need

to be done to get the DXbase Help Files to run properly.. 





(1) Downloading the correct  winhlp32.exe file

and

(2) Enabling MACROS




BUT - we have JUST run into a dilemma that a PROGRAMMER is needed

to correct!!




Sometimes - the DXbase users' winhlp32.exe file (in his C:\Windows directory)

is a SIZE of ONLY 10KB ... The internet calls this a STUB file  ???   Bottomline is

that THIS small file is not a GOOD winhlp32.exe file ... 





I just helped another DXbase user find out why his HELP FILES would not

open up at all ...  We found that his  winhlp32.exe file was only 10KB ... and,

ONCE HE deleted that SMALL winhlp32.exe file - and downloaded the proper

one -- his help files are running ALL OK..




PROBLEM:    Winhlp32.exe  is a trusted installer file - and unless YOU (as the user)

takes ownership of that  winhlp32.exe file ... YOU CAN NOT delete it ..




NOW - another DXbase user ALSO has this SAME problem  (winhlp32.exe STUB 


file only - 10KB in size) -- and I can not help him..




This SMALL 10KB sized winhlp32.exe file is seen on  Windows7 32bit,  Windows 7 64bit,

and Windows8.1 64 bit .... so, it is NOT limited to just one Operating System...




I have a gut-feeling that MANY of the DXbase users - who CAN NOT get their

come open - are running into the same problem..




The internet talks about programs that can TAKE OWNERSHIP of a file - but, I am

at a total loss on this one ... Since you are a programmer - is there something that can

help the DXbase users on this problem?

YES!!! That is the only problem on your 8.1/64bit computer!!! Neal - here is one more confirmed SMALL SIZED winhlp32.exe.

Neal,

I tried something on this Windows7 64bit laptop - just to see if I
could uninstall Winhlp32.exe via the Control Panel - 

the entry is under KB917607

I was skeptical - but, this is not my full-use computer - so, I
DID THE UNINSTALL of KB917607

IT TOOK A WHILE for the uninstall to take hold... when it was
DONE, I looked at my C:\Windows directory and just about
went crazy when I SAW

Winhlp32.exe 10KB

sitting there!!!!!!! I literally did not have any HOPES of this working..
BUT - knowning that KB917607 was NOT in my Windows Updates log
any more -- I went ahead and downloaded the PROPER winhlp32.exe
file for thhis computer -- and WAS AMAZED that the update went through
and WAS ALL OK --- 

Winhlp32.exe 290KB

So, we at least have one method of the guys getting back their REAL
Winhlp32.exe file and then having the DXbase2007 Help Files work
properly....

The LAST update for KB917607 that I just did NOW reads:

Update for Windows (KB917607)
Installation date: ?3/?20/?2015 4:42 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important
Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe)

I knew that KB917607 was the tag because of the following webpage:

This is the webpage where we start the download of Winhlp32.exe

YOU had mentioned about Windows Updates -- so, I thought I would
look at my Windows Updates in the Control Panel/ Uninstall Programs

and sure enough -- the entry for

KB917607

was right there as a WINDOWS UPDATE ..

REMEMBER that I already had a GOOD Winhlp32.exe on this computer, so I
do not know how this will work with a 10KB Winhlp32.exe .. I would think
that IF there is an entry in Windows Updates for KB917607 -- then my
method should work there also..

Just did a fresh install on DXBase2007 on my new computer with Windows 8.1 preinstalled.  As expected, the Help would not run. So I clicked on the link provided, downloaded the Windows 8.1 version of the winhlp32.exe file (920kb file), and ran it. Help works perfectly now.

Earl N5ZM has found the cure for Windows 8.1/64bit Winhlp32.exe
being a small (10KB)filesize and deleting KB917607 from the Windows Updates
-- then downloading the proper sized Winhlp32.exe file DOES NOT work at all.

Earl researched the Knowledge Base at microsoft and found that the recent
KB3000850 Windows Update was the probable culprit. Tonight, Earl
deleted the KB917607 update and also the KB3000850 update (took a lengthy amount of time!!) -
and then he downloaded the proper KB917607 (Winhlp32.exe) file. The
downloaded filesize was NOW 279KB!!!! 

Earl can now read the Help Files of DXbase2007 ALL OK!!

With this problem now being solved, there are no outstanding issues
with the Help Files under Windows 7/32, Windows 7/64, and Windows 8.1/64 bit.

I just got the DXbase help working on this 64 bit win 8.1 laptop.  I looked
at the winhlp32.exe file size and saw that it was ~10k.  I uninstalled
updates KB917607 (no time at all) and KB3000850 (couple minutes) then
reinstalled KB917607.  All is well with this computer.  Next time I have a
chance I will do the same with the Win7 computers.

 

There is joy in mudville this afternoon.  Actually no mud since everything
is either frozen, covered with snow or both.

I repaired mine in a slightly different fashion.

I have a piece of software that let' s me take control of _ANY_ windows 
file. It's a shareware program found on the net.

I was then able to delete the old (bad) 10Kb winhelp32.exe file and copy 
a good one in it's place.

So I believe I still have :

KB917607 and KB3000850 installed, but I have not looked to be sure.

  

What will Windows do to us next?

I am pretty sure that KB3000850 is the culprit for this as well as not
being able to rerun the update to install the proper winhlp32.exe

I am surprised how difficult it was but once you understand the steps that
caused the problem, its easier to fix. I am so appreciative to Joe and all
the others who spent hours on learning how to back this stuff out!

for Earl to test his findings -- I looked at my 8.1/64 laptop and found
that I HAD TRIED to download the KB3000850 back on March 10, and 11 of 2015..
BUT both attempts FAILED... So, that is the reason why I did not have
a problem with Winhlp32.exe like some of the DXbase users..

So, as a TEST - I tried to download KB3000850 again (770Megs - YES that BIG!!)
.. half-way thru it stopped downloading completely. So, I stopped the install. I was
hoping to do some testing on my own computer.

Talk about lucky failures!

This is likely to happen more frequently once Microsoft gets us all on
Windows 10, since we will never get new major releases of windows but the
continual refreshing of each of the parts through update process.

 I am downloading the KB3000850 right now - finally it is downloading nicely for my test.

 My Winhlp32.exe right now (during the downloading) is ALL OK with Winhlp32.exe at 279KB..

 Will see what happens once the downloading of KB3000850 finishes and I
 can see what happens and reboot the machine ..

 Downloading of the KB3000850 took 43 minutes.. System is now INSTALLING the
 update... 

 Installing complete -- RESTARTING computer now!

 YEP!! SURE ENOUGH - once reboot - looked at the Windows directory and my
Winhlp32.exe is now showing 10/28/2014 and only 10KB ....

Going now to remove KB3000850 and bring back Winhlp32.exe ..

At least I KNOW now that KB3000850 is THE CULPRIT!!!

This is likely to happen more frequently once Microsoft gets us all on Windows 10, since we will never get new major releases of windows but the continual refreshing of each of the parts through update process.

I am surprised how difficult it was but once you understand the steps that

ALL:

If you find that you have KB3000850 update installed on your computer -
and then you remove it -- be aware that unless you program your Windows Updates
to NEVER allow KB3000850 to try and be installed again -- you will end up
with the same problem you just cured..

On my Win 8.1/64bit computer - once I removed KB3000850 from that computer
-- I went into my Windows  Update program (after seeing that it was trying to
reinstall that update of KB3000850) and  HIDE the update so that it would
never try to install it.. Also, I DO NOT have Automatic download and install setup.

>From what I can see -- KB3000850 is only a problem for win8.0/64 - win8.1/64 systems..
I have checked my Win7/32 bit and Win7/64 bit computers and none of them have
KB3000850 installed or in hidden area.

Just more FYI..

Just a heads-up about a callsign that are in the AMBIGUOUS category for Prefixes ...

 Just saw that the callsign DX0P from Spratley Islands will be active 
 on 14-20 April 2015. This callsign will default to Philippines (DU) 
 because of the Alias Map table mapping.
 
 This callsign is not currently MAPPED in the CALLMAP table -- so, if you want,
 simply make a dummy QSO with this callsign and change the PREFIX column
 of your logbook mdb file to 1S and then when the pop-up asks you if you want
 to save this DX0P mapped to 1S -- say YES/OK ---- Then delete that dummy QSO ..
 
 The CALLMAP table will now be updated in advance so that if you work this
 station -- it will have the correct PREFIX in your logbook QSO window ...
